The original spec sheet, and many pictures on the web, use the old
picture of the box with the black/brown lid. There is a larger
view
here, but note that the case
is now silver - as show in the photo above. |
| Main Features (I believe them to be correct but tell me if they're wrong) | |
| □ | twin Freeview tuner with the ability to record two channels at once whilst watching a pre-recorded programme |
| □ |
14-Day MHEG EPG (Electronics
Progarmme Guide). This is the
4TV Interactive
one (channel
704). The EPG
downloads at 3am each day from MUX D. Software updates via same
channel. Mux info
here Note. 1.7.7 firmware extends the EPG to 14 days, 0.31.0 provides 7-days. Get the update, get 14 days ! The EPG/firmware download usually takes 30-50 minutes, so best not to schedule a recording between these times as it reboots during the process. |
| □ | personal calendar and reminder functions which you use to set up personal reminders for appointments, birthdays, and other major events. |
| □ | 40GB hard drive Typically you might get 26 hours according to the manual. The actual capacity is dependant on the transmitted bit-rate. If you compress recordings you "may" be able to get around 40 hours. As an example see here for details on the Crystal Palace transmitter. By default the Thomson records the broadcast stream thus the bit rate being transmitted at the time is recorded, this could be 2.3Mbits/sec, or up to 15Mbits/sec in a few cases. Transmitter channel allocation by region available here. |
| □ | multi brand remote that can control multiple Thomson products, e.g. DVD, TV. |
| □ | preview other channels without leaving the one you are watching. |
| □ | 2 X Scart Sockets + 1 X S-Video. |
| □ | Twin RCA analogue audio out phonos. |
| □ | Digital audio, and optical digital audio out (PCM stereo only). aka coax and optical |
| □ | Very compact, size: 360 x 55 x 235 [ Packaging dimensions (WxHxD) in mm 417 x 134 x 300 ] Weight approx 2.5kg |
| □ | 30 minutes time-shift on each channel - unless recording is in progress. '0' key swaps between tuners. |
| □ | Made in the UK by Thomson UK Broadband Ltd |
| □ | Can record Radio Channels |
| □ | MHEG Digital Text (BBCi etc) |
| □ | Archive recordings to a DVD writer or VHS tape via the VCR SCART socket. Scheduled archive will auto-start "compatible" DVD-recorder or VHS systems. |
| □ | No card slot/CAM - can't be used to receive TopUp TV. Freeview channels only. |
| □ | RF modulator so you can use Coax |
| □ | Radio channel and lasma display blanking. Automatically protects your equipment from screen burn. |
| □ | SCART cable (min. 1.2m) included - well, one or two manufacturers don't ! And the RF cable. |
| □ | VCR SCART for connection of VCR/DVD/DVD recorded. You can watch the output of these via the Thomson box, but not record their content to the hard disk. The box has a decoder for the mpeg DTT streams, but not an encoder as the older Tivo box has. |
| □ | Favourite channels list to personalise your line-up |
| □ | Parental Controls / Child Lock with PIN code. |

Michael (first person I know to have purchased one) posted on DigitalSpy, here, and one from "plugman" here. Many others on this thread have now purchased. In a couple of cases people have reported that the fan/hard disk makes more noise than they are comfortable with. It appears that the fan/hard disk don't switch off in standby. Thomson are aware of this and are looking in to the possibility of changing it - presumably it might be possible to control these in software as my PC does (note. I hardly ever turn my PC off but use suspend-to-ram, BIOS setting S3, and then resume when I want to use it). One possibility is to move the box further away from the TV/viewing area. I use a 5m SCART lead from Argos for my equipment; it sits in the corner of the room. |

From the spec sheet I know it uses a STi5514 STB chip, info: Sti5514 With this chip it mentions the use of OS/20 RTOS (Real Time Operating System). I'm not saying this is what they use but that's what goes with the STi5514 chip on the Thomson spec sheet ! Info:OS/20 RTOS At present it appears the drive is a Seagate ST340015ACE (specs: here). There is a fan underneath the hard disk. |

| 'Series Links' | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Does it do 'season passes' or 'series links' ? No. I'm trying to find out from 4TV if the data they supply has enough information for 'series links', but as yet I don't know. I do know that there does not appear to be a way to record series links - you'd have to spend a 5-10 minutes each week programming them in, e.g. for Eastenders, Corrie, etc. More details of the scheduling options are in the manual page numbers 11-15. For some people this might be important, and it's certainly a useful feature, so I've added it to the 'wish list' below. |

| Upgrading the hard drive |
|
[ if you're going to swap out the hard drive remember that it will void the remainder of your 12-months warranty, and for goodness sake be careful - disconnect the electrical supply and leave it for 10 minutes so that capacitors can drain. Be careful to avoid touching the PSU components - SAFETY FIRST ! Also, be very careful with your fingers when removing the lid - there are quite sharp edges, I know from experience ! ] Probably the next thing to consider, for enthusiasts, is the tricky question of whether that hard disk can be easily upgraded - always something that people with a Pace Twin, a Human 8000T, or Tivo want to know. Just for info, upgrading the Tivo hard drive is a pig! I've done it, but it does require a complicated set of steps. The Humax 8000T disk can be upgraded by practically anyone, and the Pace Twin is also easy. Obviously any hard drive upgrade on this model will invalidate the warranty, enough said. Alternative drives, running at 5400rpm (same as this Seagate) include the Samsung SpinPoint V80. Around £70 from SaverStore.com. Full overview of Samsung drives here. "Cotman" also suggests the Western Digital 120GB 5400rpm from Ebuyer. There's always debate over which drive is best. You want quietest, and least heat. I have personally tried a Seagate 120GB drive, a Seagate 160GB 8MB buffer drive, a Diamond Max 16, and Samsung Spinpoint SP1604N and SV1203N drives. The SV1203N is a 5400 rpm drive, so runs cooler than most, and in Quiet mode has no clicking when recording two programmes at once. The SP1604N doesn't have any clicking but is a 7200 rpm drive and generates more heat and vibrations. The Diamond Max 16 was a 5400 rpm drive but even in quiet mode there was some audible clicking. Audible clicking is where the heads are seeking across the disk between two streams, e.g. if you're recording two programmes at once. Sebby recommends a Maxtor QuickView, try: TechnoWorld, read why here. Maxtor DiamondMax 9 drives also available here. And also here. Seagate drives also work - I'm using one at the moment, good prices here. Brave "Cotman" swapped out his drive for another and it worked without any problems. However, having recorded around 70+ hours it appears there may be the usual 120GB maximum drive limit, see his comments here. Note that you shouldn't have to do anything if the drive is new as it will be blank, but re-using an existing drive you may need to blank the drive. "cotman" erased the first 63 sectors by manually blanking them in Hex Workshop V4.21. Note. The ST5514 chip ONLY works up to 128GB - so you can't use the full capacity of a drive larger than than. See here. Note. Remember that 5400rpm drives generate less heat. You can get more information about replacement drives on the Tivo Community forum, see here, look under 'Tivo Upgrade Centre'. Dave90 on DigitalSpy did some experiments by removing the plastic hard drive caddy and replacing it with Silicon Tubing tied around the drive - for more details click here. Remember modification invalidates warranty, but his experiments certainly appear to have increased airflow, thus cooling the psu, and reduced noise. Note that noise is very subjective. Some people have their unit in a cabinet with glass door - so don't have an issue with noise, others sit 10 feet away from the unit and don't have an issue, some people live in small studio flats, or have it in their bedroom, and the noise can be intrusive. I live in a studio flat in Central London but I have a large diameter fan in the corner as I like air to circulate all the time and, frankly, have become so use to this fan that I can't sleep without it - so there's always a slight hum of this large fan. However, I do want to increase the air flow over the psu so will consider Dave90's excellent modification idea. There's also a page by "Sebby*" here, which details how to make your PVR silent - both ideas require some modification. Russ emails me - he tried a Samsung SP1614N (7,200RPM, 8MB Cache) but couldn't get it to work with the Thomson. We're looking for a source of Silicon Tubing on the Internet, or perhaps a high-street store. Any ideas, please email here. Steve suggested "Have you tried an aquatic supplier. They often sell silicone tubing for use with air pumps in tropical fish tanks.". Peter recently emailed with the following advice: "... Pop along to any model shop that sells R/C cars or aeroplanes were you'll find large quantities of silicon tubing in differing diameter... It's very heat/fuel resistant... We use it to connect the fuel tank to engine, can be purchased off the reel and is fairly inexpensive.". Sounds as though it might be under our noses. Also, Chris said you can get it at: http://www.rswww.com/, part number: 288-5099 The firmware, old and new, both appear to be stored on a chip - thus, replacing the hard drive should not affect what firmware revision you are on. Oh, and there's a thread on DigitalSpy.co.uk about upgrading the hard drive, see here. NOTE (SAMSUNG SP1604N), the might be an issue with the firmware on this drive. To use this on the Fusion or Thomson you might need to downgrade to the pervious firmware revision on the hard drive (not the Thomson or Fusion firmware), see here. NOTE. There might now be a way to read programmes off the hard drive and burn to DVD via your computer, see here. |
| Recording Times: |
|
There are 2 modes - initial recordings appear to be made in SP mode, taking the broadcast stream and not compressing it - thus no definite record time as the broadcast bit-rates change. Once recorded you can then convert it to LP mode; this is a slower process, as it does it in the background. (source: Teeps). The standard allocation appears to be 2GB/hour, thus a 120GB drive should achieve something around 60-70 hours recording. Note that as mentioned bit-rates are highly variable and the actual space used once the recording has finished could be smaller. Recording lots of low bit-rate programmes, e.g. shopping channels (where there is less movement) should result in smaller disk use, but sports, which are often broadcast with much greater bit-rates, will take up the more. The disk format appears to be a "AV PES/TS" File System. NOTE. There might now be a way to read programmes off the hard drive and burn to DVD via your computer, see here. |

The DHD4000 is available from a number of shops and resellers, including
John Lewis, Dixons/Comet, Unbeatable and QED-UK.
Dixons/Comet were selling them for £299 initially but the prices have
comes down. First to a more realistic £199, now prices have
settled at just over £150. Note: I tend to double-check prices
every few weeks. Note that prices sometimes increase - see the
table below. Price League Table (updated: 12th November 05) Note. A number of retailers no longer sell this particular model. I spoke to Thomson about this and this product has not been discontinued, however since the market is flooded with DVR boxes now, some may have decided to go for boxes where they can make greater margins - who knows. The GREAT thing tho, QED prices are extremely competitive !
Also, see at the top of this
page - Argos are selling them for £99.99 ! But only where they
still have stock.
Find-ElectricalGoods.co.uk
provides a good price comparison. If you find a
good price email me
here, or if you're
a retailer and I've got your unit or delivery price wrong, also email me
and I'll correct it immediately.
Another good place to check prices is DigitalRadioTech.co.uk,

occasionally their prices are most accurate, sometimes mine - depends

| Problem List (old 0.31.0 firmware) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
--New list started here As with almost any piece of complex equipment in an emerging market there will be bugs, or things that haven't been included, but which people would like. This is a preliminary list of possible bugs and issues. PROB-01: ELECTRONIC PROGRAMME GUIDE MAY NOT DOWNLOAD ON FIRST OR SECOND DAY It is confirmed that it's the 4TV Interactive EPG. Some people have downloaded it ok from Crystal Palace, and usually if it doesn't download the first day, it should download the next day, or the day after. Once it's got it's initial download all further EPG downloads should be ok. Remember you need reasonable MUX D reception to receive the EPG (here's a list of allocations). There was a report that the RF modulator could interfere with other equipment, see here. Turn it off in the Technical Menu if you don't need it ! The EPG downloads at 3am - make sure that you do not interfere with the box when it's downloading (about 30 mins) as this seems to cause problems with the download. Note. 30 minutes "may" be required for the initial download, not sure if it takes this long every day. Leave your box in stand-by to get the EPG overnight. Note also that digital text may not work until the EPG has correctly downloaded. It's possible the first one or two downloads also contain software. Thomson are aware that the box "can" take more than one attempt to download the EPG but it should arrive on the first night. FAVOURITES (not a bug or issue) Setting favourites does not appear to amend the EPG, e.g. you still see all the TopUp TV channels even though you may have excluded them. There are conflicting reports - one says they don't work, another says they do. It could be an intermittent fault, or it may need user-training ! UPDATE: Not a bug. You just need to press the YELLOW button when in the EPG to switch the use of favourites on and off. Now remembers what you selected, e.g. only favorites, in 1.7.7 software. PROB-03: GUIDE BUG If you are recording two programmes simultaneously and then go in to the EPG there appears to be no way to easily escape until one of the recordings has finished. Thomson are fixing this. Fixed in 1.7.7 software. PROB-04: DIGITAL TEXT Occasionally Text channels will not load. Looks like there is an intermittent bug. Apparently by pressing buttons on the front of the box it clears the problem. I'm trying to track down more details. Believed to be fixed in 1.7.7 software - possibly too early to tell. PROB-05: VIDEO GLITCHES Video glitches/freeze frames occasionally - this has happened several times to me. (Redrenojohn) Note that this is almost certainly due to reception issues. Instead of the usual pops and pixilation that you see on some boxes the Thomson freezes the last good picture until reception of a good one. I personally have had few of these since I bought the box - more of a reception issue than a problem. PROB-06: REMINDERS IN EPG - WRONG TIME If you set a reminder via the EPG it pops up an hour too early. Thomson are aware and will fix. PROB-07: TIME-SLIP FRAGMENT OF PROGRAMME NOT ADDED TO RECORDING, AND TIME-SLIP LOST When you are chasing the programme end, e.g. time-slip, where you are watching the programme, say, 15 minutes after the live output and you select to record the programme - for example you decide it's getting late and you want to go to bed, when you press record it drops you back to live TV, having lost what was in the buffer. It isn't added to the recording, nor can you backtrack to watch it from the buffer. This means, for example, you've lost 15 minutes of the programme. Since it was in the buffer it really should be transferred to the recording, and you should be returned to the point in time where you paused, or were watching, not live tv. Enhanced in 1.7.7 software - it now will add any part of the recording which is in the buffer. Tested and works. PROB-08: NOISE The unit does make a slight hum. It's not distracting or annoying (in my opinion) when you're watching TV but if you live in a studio flat, or this box is for your bedroom, then the hum is constant and could be annoying. There is a fan under the hard drive, and that is the primary cause of the hum. Thomson know about this and were planning to put in a fix in the software to turn it off, but later reports suggest that might not be possible. Disk drive now is shut off when not needed, fan remains on. (1.7.7 software) PROB-09: HEAT The unit has a SMPSU (Switched Mode Power Supply Unit) made by Grundig, or made by Samsung for Grundig. The PSU is the same model designed for Satellite receivers, e.g. it has +30v lines included - these are used by Satellite receiver, not DTT boxes. The PSU (front, left) does get quite hot. There are concerns by many people that this could lead to component failure early in it's life, possibly just after the 12 months warranty period has expired - which has been a common feature on 'some' Grundig satellite receivers. However, this is a version 2 PSU and thus impossible to tell if it has this in common with the original PSUs. Thomson Broadband UK Ltd have assured me that "the rating of selection of the components used is such so as to be fit for purpose". I found that making sure there was good clearance at the base reduced heat build-up. I stuck mine on a roll of packing tape! Provided you do not pack your equipment too close together, e.g. you leave a 2cm gap under the machine, the heat is acceptable. There is now considerably less heat generated because the hard disk is shut off when in standby (1.7.7 software). In my opinion HEAT is no longer an issue. NOTE (21-Aug-05) I'm revising my statement above. In light of the hot weather (what there has been anyway), heat continued to seem to be a concern amongst people with the DHD4000. I raised this issue with Thomson when the box first appeared but they did assure me (see above), that there basically wasn't an issue. However, whilst, along the way, I had removed the caddy and the fan - without any issues, I did get a failure where the box appeared to have suffered some corruption. When I removed the lid I found the drive was EXTREMELY hot. As a consequence I've fitted the drive (Seagate 160GB, 8MB buffer) back in to the caddy with fan. I seriously do not recommend removing the fan and caddy during the summer months - unless you have the equipment in a cool, ventilated, room. In Winter, I see no problem - if noise is an issue. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| OLD Wish List (Feature Requests - 0.31.0 software) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Here are a list of features which people would like to see added. Reading through will clarify whether the issue will be one which will annoy you. Thomson are considering the wish list but note that as the product has only just been released there is no indication which might be included in future releases, or when. ENH-01: SUB-TITLES Sub-titles can be displayed on the screen but do not appear to be recorded with the programme, so when you play back the recording sub-titles are missing. These can, according to the enhancements, be recorded with the programme. (1.7.7 software) ENH-02: WATCH PROGRAMME FROM BEGINNING WHILST RECORDING When you are recording a programme there doesn't appear to be an easy way to start watching the programme which is recording from the beginning. Apparently the Fusion FVRT100 can't do this either (source: DigitalSpy thread here, see post #315, numbers on far right), but the Pace Twin can. The Tivo can. And now... so can the Thomson (1.7.7 software) ENH-03: TIVO-STYLE SERIES LINKS The Tivo PVR enables you to set up 'season passes' or 'series links' so that it will automatically record every episode of a particular series, e.g. Corrie, Eastenders, Andromeda, etc. This depends on whether the data transmitted by 4TV Interactive contains series link information - I'm waiting for an email to confirm if it does or doesn't. No PVR other than Tivo and Sky+ have this at present (to my knowledge). Update: Just heard back from Durkin Media Limited, for 4TV: "my understanding is that the series link is available within the 4TV software. However, each product is tailored to suit each clients specifications, and as yet it has not been specified for the Thompson PVR." Not available. May be a possible future enhancement, or not. ENH-04: DAILY / WEEKLY RECORDING CAPABILITY At present it is not possible to schedule repeat daily or weekly recordings. The Fusion FVRT100 can't do this either, don't know about the Pace Twin. Added in 1.7.7 software. ENH-05: CAPACITY INFO It would be nice to see not just a % free, but also the number of hours (standard 2GB/hour), and/or number of gigabytes left. Hours is probably best in my opinion. Note that because the space required by a programme can change minute by minute, as bit-rates can be constantly changing, it is very difficult to estimate remaining hours. No plans to change this, but you get a good indication of disk space remaining and allocated in the current software. ENH-06: RESUME PLAYBACK When you come out of watching a pre-recorded programme it doesn't give you the option to resume where you left off. On the Tivo you can simply resume playback from the point you stopped watching. I think you can bookmark to the point you think you want to go back to, but a resume function would be easier. Perhaps using the Play key, or pressing the Green, or Yellow buttons could be used in the 'Recording History' menu for this. It should now remember where you left off - not yet tested. (1.7.7 software) Apparently this ONLY works when you press PLAY in the 'recording history' menu, to continue a recording, if you press OK it'll start off from the current thumbnail, e.g. usually the beginning. ENH-07: ABILITY TO AUTO EXTEND RECORD TIME The option to automatically add on a specified amount of extra time to the start and end time of a recording as a default, i.e. adding 2mins onto the start and end of every recording so you don't miss something that starts a few seconds early or ends slightly later than specified in the EPG. Added in 1.7.7 software. ENH-08: JUMP FORWARD 30 SECONDS The ability to jump past adverts in a recording. Possibly this could work on jumping through chunks of 30 seconds, or jump to the next freeze frame (like you usually get at the end of an ad break). In reality attempting to detect the end of one programme, the ads and then the start of the next can be difficult. You can fast forward at various speeds and, as a Tivo user I've learned pretty much approx. what speed and for how long to achieve this on my Tivo, so it might just be a question of getting use to the fast forward key. Not available. However, you can fast forward in 5 minutes (default thumbnail time), or fast forward easily enough. ENH-09: AUTO-SET THUMBNAIL PRODUCTION I would like the "create thumbnail" setting to be part of the permanent set-up - I don't see why the box has to ask this after every recording, and don't see why it can't be a background process. Perhaps there could be an option in the set-up that says "prompt me to create thumbnails after programmes", so people can decide whether they get asked after every recording or not. Thumbnails are no automatically generated at your set interval (5 or 10 minutes). 1.7.7 software. ENH-10: ADD CONTENTS OF BUFFER TO RECORDING The ability to hit record up to 30 minutes into a program and have it backtrack through the buffer and save from the start of the program into the Record History. Useful if you start watching a program and then realise that you wished you had recorded it from the start. This is the same functionality as Tivo provides. Added in 1.7.7 software. ENH-11: SCHEDULE LIMIT You cannot schedule more programs than there is space available. This might mean that although you do have space to record all the programmes you want to add to the schedule for a week, because you will be watching them later each day, or on subsequent days, each time you add a scheduled recording it reserves space on the disk and won't let you add more programmes to the schedule. Further to this it would be nice to have a recording history so that if the disk fills up because you haven't watched and deleted programmes along the way, there should be a clear indication of which programmes it recorded, and which it didn't, and why. You can schedule daily/weekly recordings which take up only the space for one programme, however each time you schedule a programme it pre-allocated space. This isn't a bad idea. A 40GB drive was a little limiting for me but I have a 120GB drive now and that solved the problem for me. ENH-12: NOISE At least three people said that the noise made by the unit was high. Generally you should not notice this when watching TV but the disk drive (as in the Tivo) remains on continuously, and apparently the fan underneath stays on too. Noise is highly subjective - what irritates one person may be fine for another. I'm trying to get more information about whether the disk drive, or the fan, is the main source of noise. Turning the fan off when the unit is in standby would probably fix this. Note that Thomson have indicated that future versions of the software will manage these when in entering stand-by. 1.7.7 software now turns off the drive when it is not required, e.g. in standby. It wakes the drive up when required for archiving recordings, downloading the EPG, and making recordings. ENH-13: TIMELINE BANNER WHEN PLAYING A RECORDING In a recording pressing Play doesn't bring up the progress/timeline banner - I think it should, otherwise how do you know where you are. You can just quickly reverse and then play but you should be able to see at a single press where you are. 1.7.7 didn't change this... pity. But you can press pause and play - which brings up the banner. ENH-14: ASK TO DELETE AT END OF PLAYING A RECORDING At the end of my first main recording it cycled back to the beginning and started playing it again. I don't know if it was just me, but if this is a feature then really at the end of the recording it should ask if you wish to delete. At the end of the recording you're taken back to the recording history menu (new in 1.7.7 software). ENH-15: REMOVE UNNECESSARY "OK" CLICK When creating thumbnails it needlessly requires you to press OK - why? It's an unnecessary click. See ENH-09 request for menu option to auto-create thumbnails which might eliminate this request. Thumbnails now automatically generated - no clicks in volved. (1.7.7 software) ENH-16: AMEND START/END TIMES FOR A RECORDING FROM THE EPG When you press RED to record a programme (in "programme guide") you are taken to the "record list" menu. You should be able to press OK and amend the start and end times - I couldn't. You can press OK to amend start and end times for a manual recording. See ENH-07 request for menu option to automatically add specified minutes to start and end of all recordings. However, in my experience for BBC2 you sometimes need to add 10 minutes to the end time, not 5 minutes which is suitable for other channels. Just the option to amend the start/end times by pressing OK would be great. I'm happy to do it myself. You can move cursor right to amend start and end times - in all software versions, but in 1.7.7 software it can now automatically add a guard time. Been using this - tested and works. ENH-17: CONTINUE SOUND WHILST IN MENUS When you are in the menus (not all) sound is cut off. No reason for that as in "programme guide" and "technical help" both have sound and vision. Vision might get in the way of some menus, but it's distracting for sound to cut off and I don't think it needs to be. Sound is still cut off in most menus. ENH-18: VOLUME KEY ON REMOTE SHOULD CONTROL DVR VOLUME There should be an option in the software to control the DVR volume with the volume key. That key does send codes to the box as you can see the light on the front flash when the Vol +/- is pressed. Otherwise I'm back to two remote controls. It should be very easy to control the volume level of the output of the DVR within software. Volume button still doesn't control STB volume, even though this capability would be appreciated by many - I have more remotes than I can shake a stick at - one less would be good. ENH-19: JUMP FACILITY IN PLAYBACK During playback of a recording I would like to see a jump facility. Those left and right arrow keys (next to OK) do nothing during a playback but could be used to jump forwards or backwards, say, 10 minutes. No change in 1.7.7 software. Would be good if they did exactly what the |>> and <<| keys (bottom of remote) do. ENH-20: GO TO RECORD LIST FROM NOW / NEXT-STYLE MENU On the Now/Next screen (once the EPG is loaded it also allows you to flick through the whole EPG) I'd like to be able to press RED to directly go to the "record list" menu. REC button doesn't appear to take you to the record list menu (still), but there is a new facility. Holding REC down for 2 seconds records that programme, plus whatever is in the buffer for that programme. ENH-21: PROGRAM SYNOPSIS IN PLAYBACK In a playback there should be a way to bring up the programme synopsis. That might be the same as above. Pressing play could bring up the timeline, and at the top of the screen the synopsis. Still no way to bring up programme synopsis for a programme you have recorded. The synopsis is available in the Record History tho. ENH-22: USE LEFT/RIGHT ARROW KEYS TO NAVIGATE MENUS When in the menus you have to press OK to enter sub-menus, you should also be able to press the right-arrow key - it's natural. That's how you navigate menus on lots of other equipment. |

Gotchas
Unit Stops Responding to the Remote Press the STB button on the remote. If you accidentally pressed, or have forgotten you've pressed, the TV or DVD buttons, the remote is now sending Thomson TV or Thomson DVD codes - which the STB doesn't understand. Press STB to start sending DHD4000 commands again. A common reason for thinking the box has packed up - I've done it myself a few times. Unit Not Very Responsive to the Remote Change the batteries. They don't last forever ! The response to my remote was getting more and more sluggish. I changed the batteries and now it's much better. The remote and unit are quite directional in terms of responding to the remote, so you need to point it right at the unit. Run out of disk space? If you schedule all the programmes for a week you might eventually run out of disk space, even though you do plan to watch some of the recordings before the week is up - so, in theory, there would be enough space. If you use the Scheduler option and select one programme for deletion, you will be able to add more recordings, up to the limit of that recording, i.e. if you have a full disk and mark a recording towards the end of the week, it should allow you to schedule another recording up to the limit of the one marked for deleting. So, say you have 3x 2 hour films recorded - which you haven't watched, you can mark them for deletion and it should allow 6 more hours recording. HOWEVER, be careful you really will have space by the time it's needed or it may delete those unwatched recordings ! What are the engineering codes to get in to the secret menu? Thanks to Nick for this. As the unit is not longer being manufactured the technical helpline gave Nick the codes. These allow access to a set of engineering menus which allow you to format the disk, etc. You should only 'play' entirely at your own risk !!! You go to the Technical Help menu and within a few seconds you must press the codes below. There are different ones for v1.7.7 and v.2.3.9 firmware. Remember, you only have about 3-5 seconds.
V 1.7.7: 2846
V 2.3.9: 1004 Thanks to Nick for these. |

Enhancement Request. Note. Many items were
identified by others (esp. Dave), not me, so credit is due there.
This list of problems and requested feature enhancements is provided here only to assist in identifying what needs to be changed to make this PVR even better, it is not, generally, a criticism of the product, but a way to say "what would make the product better for me would be if...." I think the product is great, but this is just a way of encouraging the manufacturer, Thomson, to make it even better ! Although I would personally like to see greater communication from Thomson, sometimes in a competitive field it simply isn't appropriate for commercial reasons. Therefore, we tell them what we think might enhance their product to better meet our needs, and we wait to see which they feel are useful, and feasible.
